We believe that sustainability is the future. That’s why we make sure that your old bike doesn’t just end up on the scrap heap when you trade it in for an e-bike, but can be used again. How? By giving it a new life in cooperation with Velafrica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Velafrica is a company of the Sinnovativ Foundation and successfully engaged in integration work in Switzerland and development work in Africa. Both of these themes come together with Velafrica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since 1993, Velafrica has been collecting old, decluttered bicycles from Switzerland and shipping them to various destinations in Africa. Some examples are Tanzania, South Africa and Ghana. The bicycles are refurbished in Switzerland and then brought to Africa for a second life. Every year, 20,000 bicycles reach Africa by ship!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once they reach their destination, the formerly discarded bicycles provide a lot of relief and quality of life to locals. Children can get to school more safely, adults can manage their often very long journeys to work more easily, and heavy goods can be transported with ease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Velafrica works with several partners in Switzerland to repair and refurbish the bicycles, some of which have been dusty and broken in the cellar. The main partners are integration centres and other social enterprises as well as institutions for the enforcement of measures. In this way, additional meaningful and important jobs are created in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once the bicycles have arrived in Africa, the staff and partners take them to various institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another essential focus of Velafrica starts here. Partner institutions offer apprenticeships and numerous jobs are created. Thanks to Velafrica, several centres have already been established where men and women can train as bicycle mechanics. The video of the Arusha Bicycle Center (ABC) offers a great insight – we highly recommend watching it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another and the newest one of these centres was launched in Burkina Faso in 2019. Locally, the structures for training places are still lacking in most places and therefore the programme is more detailed. With “Faso Velo”, there is now a Foundation-owned training centre. Around 700 mechanics will complete their training there by 2023 and then have the prospect of a job or can open their own workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We find the successes achieved by Velafrica valuable and admirable. How do we get involved with MyBikePlan? Our mission is to help as many people as possible achieve two-wheel mobility. Together with this valuable organisation, we can pursue this goal on a second continent for the first time! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
From now on, we will donate a certain amount to the “Bike to School” project of Velafrica with every e-bike purchase. This enables a child in Africa to cycle to school for a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
