Two-wheeled mobility is our passion, because bikes, with or without the “E”, are the most environmentally friendly and healthiest way to get around! Time to take a closer look at the history of the bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Draisine, invented by Karl von Drais in 1817, is considered the very first bicycle-like vehicle. It was further developed by Pierre Michaux and Pierre Lallement in 1861 when pedals and a saddle were added. Still a long way until the e-bike as we know today came into existence!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pneumatic tyre was invented by John Boyd Dunlop in 1887, which meant considerable progress in handling and functionality. Until then, people rode on wheels made of steel or, for a short time, on tyres made of solid rubber. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An equally significant invention happened at the same time: the bicycle chain. There were several precursors from numerous countries – one of the first was the roller chain by Swiss inventor Hans Renold (1852). One that has prevailed to this day and is considered the world standard is the double roller chain. It was designed and patented by the Nevoigt brothers in 1898.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the beginning of the 20th century, the first gears were built and put into operation. Both versions, the hub and the derailleur, have been further developed since then. The hub gears have become more and more advanced in terms of technology, while at the same time their weight has decreased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The development and further improvement of the first bicycle was also decisive and pioneering for the automobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let’s go into a little more detail about the development of the e-bike: the first attempt to electrify two-wheelers was made more than 120 years ago! At that time, however, the prototypes did not have pedals and only a patent was registered, which was probably not pursued for further execution and production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first e-bike was then launched in the 1930s. It may not have been able to simplify our everyday lives as much as it does today – but it still paved the way for e-bikes. However, e-bikes as we know today only came onto the global market later, from the 1990s onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lot has happened since then: the batteries have become lighter, the drives are more powerful and you can no longer tell the difference in more modern models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The focus of today’s further development continues to be on the expansion of battery capacity as well as the strength of the motor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
(E)-two-wheeled mobility should replace the car in the long term. At least for medium-range distances in everyday life. The e-bike is also already very popular as a leisure activity and a way of travelling. The flexible charging of the battery at any socket is a big plus and the ecological factor is also becoming more and more important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Bosch, every third bicycle sold will be electric in the future. Cities and their roads will have to be redesigned and optimised for this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To give this need for adaptation more awareness, for example, the Critical Mass takes place every month. All over the world, people gather on the last Friday of every month and want to show with their sheer mass how many people own a bicycle and are driving with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bike to Work is also a notable movement that takes place every year in May and June. Businesses and individuals can register for the competition with prizes for the most kilometres collected. Both help publicise and promote the development of two-wheeled mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
